Unbecoming The Princess : My Journey Beyond the Mold

Chapter Eight: Religion, Shame & Control

I used to think that my deepest fears and quietest guilts were entirely my own creation. I thought I was just inherently flawed, carrying a heavy invisible burden that I had somehow manufactured inside my own mind.

It was a profound and shattering realization to discover that much of that weight wasn't mine to begin with.

When religion is stripped of its spiritual essence and twisted into a system of behavioral management, it stops being a sanctuary and quietly transforms into a machinery of control. And the primary fuel this machinery runs on is shame.

We have all felt it—that sudden, chilling contraction in the chest when we dared to question an inherited rule, or when we stepped slightly outside the boundaries drawn by generations before us. You are taught from the earliest days to look at your own natural desires, your independent thoughts, and even your body as something inherently suspicious, something that needs to be constantly monitored, corrected, and corrected again.

The control doesn't need to be loud or external anymore because it has successfully moved inward. It builds a quiet checkpoint inside your nervous system. Every time you try to think for yourself, a familiar alarm goes off, whispering that questioning is dangerous and autonomy is a sin.

Breaking free from this requires a terrifying kind of courage. It means learning to separate the voice of the Divine—which is spacious, liberating, and loving—from the voice of institutional control, which demands conformity through fear.

I had to gently untangle my faith from the fear of punishment. I had to look at the shame I had carried for years, recognize it as a tool designed to keep me small, and quietly hand it back. In that quiet surrender, the heavy chains dissolved, and for the first time, I found a faith that didn't require me to abandon myself.
